MURALS  FOR  THE  CORAL  SPRINGS  HISTORIC  BRIDGE  PUBLIC  ART

In collaboration with the Historical Advisory Committee | City of Coral Springs | Mural location: 4500 NW (5th Avenue | Coral Springs | Florida | 2019

The two murals for the Coral Springs Covered Bridge (1964), designed by George Hodapp, were meticulously revitalized from their original forms,

and hold a captivating story within their strokes. Driven by a desire to evoke the charm of the Old South, James S. Hunt,

the President of Coral Ridge Properties embarked on a collaboration with the American Snuff company, renowned for their chewing tobacco designs.

The Bull of the Woods, a symbol of strength and vitality is located on the East side of the bridge, and its origins trace back to 1876.

The Peach Snuff logo infuses a touch of sweetness into the mural; it originated in 1950 and it is located on the west side of the bridge.

The murals have been restored throughout the years, each artist preserving the essence of its predecessors. The murals preservation

was led by the City of Coral Springs Historical Advisory Committee. The committee contributed visual references and resources,

such as vintage photographs to be used for an accurate recreation of the mural.

The murals stand as a tribute to artistic collaboration and a testament to the meticulous effort invested in honoring history

and heritage through visual storytelling.

ABOUT THE CORAL SPRINGS HISTORIC BRIDGE

Excerpt from an article by Sharon Aron Baron, published in 2018 Coral Springs Talk

The iconic covered bridge in Coral Springs was damaged after a truck tried to pass under the low-clearance roof. Originally painted barn red, James S. Hunt, president of Coral Ridge Properties, wanted to convey a sense of the Old South on the otherwise barren landscape. Hunt’s vision for Coral Springs was of a totally planned “City in the Country” with brick colonial-style public buildings, boulevards planted with flowers and the Covered Bridge as its centerpiece. The bridge also has a Florida Heritage Site Marker in recognition of its architecture and historical significance to the state. The covered bridge is depicted in Coral Springs’ previous city seal and is the only covered bridge located on a public right-of-way in the state of Florida.

“We hired Georgeta for a custom paint project on the keel bulb of a racing sailboat belonging to a client. She was very professional and worked with us to get the design exactly as we wanted it. She was also super flexible about using the marine paint that was required for the job. Once the work started, she was incredibly efficient and actually finished ahead of schedule. The result was excellent and was identical to the presented design.
